Carole
Tyas -
Textile Artist.
Carole uses the traditional skills of quiltmaking
with more contemporary design, free-machine embroidery and embellishment
to produce a range of practical and decorative items. Her fantasy fish are
a playful interpretation of fishing trophies and her whimsical range of
“Urban Divas” have been made into a fun range of casual bags.
For this event Carole has also produces a range of bed quilts in the glorious,
jewel-like colours of dupion silk. These quilts are unlike any traditional
notion of a quilt, with their glowing colours and very contemporary design.
Carole’s passion for
textiles and colour began as a child. Not only can she remember every new
dress and outfit from the age of three, she can still remember the feel
and detail of the fabrics they were made from: “Textiles are one of
the oldest crafts and I believe there is much to be inspired by and learn
from examining old and new examples.”

“Colour has
always fascinated me and I am continually inspired by the way nature is
the ultimate colourist. Colour combinations that are subtle or bold are
to be found everywhere. Arresting, outrageous, mood evoking, breathtaking,
are but poor descriptions of what nature dishes up daily.”
Carole maintained her interest
in textiles and while enjoying a corporate career, used sewing and other
crafts to balance her left brain activity. Carole formalised her interest
in colour by studying Colour and Design and after exploring many different
artistic avenues, discovered quiltmaking provided the ideal marriage of
textile, colour and design skills.
